Kundali matching compares two birth charts to gauge compatibility, most often before marriage. The best-known method is Guna Milan — the Ashtakoota system that produces a score out of 36. Here is what that score actually measures, and what it leaves out.
What Guna Milan measures
Guna Milan compares the two people's Moon signs and birth stars (nakshatras) across eight factors called kootas. Each koota carries a maximum number of points; added up they total 36 gunas. A higher score suggests smoother natural compatibility on the dimensions each koota represents.
The eight kootas (Ashtakoota)
The eight factors are Varna (1 point, temperament and ego), Vashya (2, mutual influence), Tara (3, health and well-being), Yoni (4, physical and instinctive compatibility), Graha Maitri (5, mental and intellectual bond), Gana (6, temperament type), Bhakoot (7, emotional and financial harmony), and Nadi (8, health and progeny). Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most weight and are watched most closely.
What the score means
As a rough guide, totals below about 18 are considered weak, 18 and above are generally considered acceptable, and higher scores are seen as favourable. But the number is a starting point, not a verdict — two charts can score well and still need work, or score modestly and thrive.
Beyond the score
A thorough reading looks past the 36-guna total: Mangal dosha (the position of Mars, sometimes called Manglik), the wider planetary synastry between the two charts, the strength of the 7th house of partnership in each chart, and the dasha periods each person is running. A single number can never capture two whole lives — treat it as one input among several.
